heck to go now?
Let's start with some basics:
First, some basic commands that will help you.
Autoloot . Autoexit . Autosplit . Color complete . Quest
Autoloot = This just means that once you kill a mob, you will
loot everything on that mobs corpse. If you get a message saying
that your hands are full or your a "Weakling!" then that means,
either you obviously have too much stuff on hand and need to drop
some or, you need more STRENGTH to actually be able to lift the
item(s).
Autoexit -> This command displays the exits of the room. Plain and
simple
Autosplit -> This command sets it up so that if you have more than
1 person in your group, you'll split the money looted. So if your in
a group of 3 people and you loot 99 dollars, it will say you loot 99
dollars split between 3 people, you receive 33 dollars.
Color complete -> This is obviously optional as are all the others, but
it just sets up color to the game so that certain commands are displayed
in super cool colors.
Quest -> Typing this will set up the title (quest) beside your name in the
who list, letting the immortals/admins know that you want to take place in any
quests they may choose to run.
Alright those are the 5 things i type when i create a new character. Now some
helpful hints on locations and whatnot.
When you leave the junkyard you go up out of it and are now in the San Francisco Bay.
This isn't a very exciting spot but your not far from the center of town! Just go
1 east, 1 south, and 4 east. Now your at Regan Square, this is also known as " rs "
to nearly all players.
Now that your in the center of town its much easier to get directions to and from areas.
THE HELP COMMAND IS YOUR FRIEND, USE IT!
Help area : this will display a good amount of areas corresponding to the level at which
you should go to them. It doesn't display all the zones, just a few to get you started. If
the directions to them seem cryptic, just ask anyone online if they can help you.
Help map : this displays a map of the city. It can be tough to read at first, but just try
to visualize it and walk around town, eventually you'll have no problem using it. Remember
though, left is west, right is east.
Soloing vs Team: Many players who start out choose to create 1 character and level it up.
This is completely fine, although it may take longer and be a little more difficult. Fallout
allows for up to 3 characters to be online at any given time. Using a team is of course optional
however it certainly makes things nice and easy. There is no right or wrong combination, but there
are certain teams which work very well together. The general outline of a team is to have a tank, a
healer, and a hitter. The tank takes all the damage during the fight, the hitter just beats the mob
to a bloody pulp, and the healer makes sure the tank doesn't die letting the mob come after your other
2 characters. If you choose not to use a team, then pick a character you think you'll have the most fun
with and don't just accept the first stats the roller gives you. Let it roll for awhile, find some good
stats, remember the healing classes aren't looking for 18/100 strength, they want high wisdom and intellect.
And if your getting a marine, he doesn't need to have high wis or int, he wants strength and dexterity.
Buying and Selling: When your fighting mobs and leveling up they will almost always drop some good stuff or
they'll just drop junk which is of no use to you. You can sell just about anything in fallout so make sure you
keep whatever you loot until your hands are full, and then sell it to the appropriate store. If your not sure which
store will buy which items, either ask people, or just use trial and error until you figure it out. The stores in most
towns in fallout are the same, clothing, armor, weapons, jewlery, random junk, and guns. You can also buy eq from these
stores to better equip your character or characters.
Skills and Spells: As you level up you will notice that when you type score or sc, for short, you will continue to gain
knowledge points. These are points that you trade in to learn skills or spells. Each class in the game has a specific
area to train in. All 10 are located within the city of SF (San francisco), and you can use the map to find out where
yours is. When you get there, remember ... HELP is your friend, type practice, or prac, to see which skills are available to you that you can practice. Type help <skill> to see what that skill can do for you. If your still unsure, just ask someone online, and they should be able to tell you whether or not its worth getting. To practice the skill just type prac <skill>. You may notice that it will go up incrementally so practicing it once, uses 1 knowledge point, but you can still train in it. Each time you train it (up to a maximum of 5 or 4 in some cases) there is a better chance that skill will work, so if you want to practice something, its beneficial to practice it fully, that way it will work much better for you than if you had only practiced it once or twice. In some cases some skills will get practiced up to Professional, and in other cases it will be Heroic, it just depends on the skill and the class.
Renting: When your all done playing for the day, don't forget if you want to keep the eq you've earned you have to rent it in the hotel in town. Recall " rs " , or Regan square which is in the middle of town, easy to find and use as a starting place. To rent your eq just go 1 east, 1 south, and 1 up, from " rs ", and type offer. The receptionist will then tell you the cost to rent and how long you can rent given your total amount of money. The cost to rent per day is based on the cost to rent of your most expensive item. Let's say for example you have an item that costs 40 dollars a day to rent. Also you have an item that is 50 dollars to rent, that means typing offer, she will tell you that you require 50 dollars a day to rent, and you can rent for X amount of days. (If you have 5000 dollars then you can rent for 100 days). This means over a period of 24 hours, the total amount of money you'll lose is 50 dollars. The receptionist will let you rent until you've run out of money, so if you rent for 101 days given 50 dollars a day rent, and 5000 total dollars, after the 101 days, your eq will be gone. The good news is, most items aren't very costly to rent, and money is very easy to make. JUST REMEMBER TO SELL STUFF YOU DON'T NEED.
Stats
Ok, since this is a hot topic among new players, I'll outline now what the stats you roll for, do for you.
When you create a new character you'll see something like this:
Constitution - [15] | [14] - Power > Enhancement [ 0]
Intelligence - [16] | [17] - Wisdom
Dexterity - [15] | [11] - Reflex
Keep these stats? (y/N)
Constitution is arguably the most important thing you can have in the game, but it isn't very important while rolling because you can actually buy con when you are playing (con = constitution from here on in). Con is a stat that determines how much hp you will gain per level. The max con for a character is 18 and its important to keep it as close to 18, or at 18, all the time.
When you roll, its good to get 15+ con, that way you don't have to buy much when you start playing. Having 18 con doesn't necessarily mean you will gain 18hp per level, the amount of HP gained per level is based on the class you rolled. Basically a PSI or a MED won't get as much hp as a MAR or a BIO.
Losing con: when your character is killed in combat, you have a chance to lose con. Up to level 10 however you will not lose con but after level 10, generally you will lose 1 or 2, but you can lose more, or you have a chance of losing none. However you do lose hp and experience when you die, so be careful.
Buying con: first of all, con is expensive, but it gets more expensive the higher level you are, so keep that in mind. Typically at around level 1-10 it can cost around 4000 dollars per con point, thats just a rough estimate since I haven't got the numbers on hand. By level 30 it gets to be around 9000 dollars per con point. To buy con there is a hallway of doctors,
Directions from SF Bay: 2 east, 1 down, 2 east, and 1 south -- This is the con doctor room, you must remove all your clothing to buy con
Directions from RS (Regan Square): 4 west, 1 north, 1 east, 1 down, 2 east, and 1 south.
Power is the next stat shown in the stats rolling sequence. Power is strength, and it plays a role in a few things during the game. Firstly, it determines the amount of weight you can wield or carry. If you ever get a message saying "You can't wield that, Weakling!", it means you need more strength. Again the max is 18, however, the Enhancement effect also comes into play. Enhancement can only be rolled by Mercenaries and Marines, all other classes must remort to get this stat higher, (remorting is simply being level 30, and going back to level 1, with same eq , and everything, ...when in game, type HELP REMORT to learn more). Enhancement can go as high as 100.
Intelligence is a stat useful for mana using characters and it basically determines the amount of mana gained per level. Its useful only really for mana using characters.
Wisdom is a stat that determines the amount of knowledge points gained per level but it also depends on your class. With 18 wisdom my MONK gains 5 points per level and uses 4 to max out a skill. My EDGERUNNER gains 2 per level and needs 5 to max out a skill.
Reflex and dexterity are basically just stats that help you in combat, I can't recall anything they do specifically, however its not really important to know other than if you have full dex and ref, its better than not having them full
There is a machine in the doctor's hallway that tells you what your current stats are, it costs a little bit of money but at level 30 it tops out around 900 dollars, so level 1 only costs about 100 or so. This is what will appear:
Directions to this machine from the bay: 2east, 1down, 1east, 1south
Directions to this machine from RS: 4west, 1north, 1east, 1down, 1east, 1south
